Willow Detroit- A New Black Owned Speakeasy Downtown

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

This past Friday VibesDetroit had the opportunity to visit Willow Detroit one of the country's only black owned speakeasies and the only speakeasy in Michigan that is FULLY black owned, managed and operated front the owners to the waitstaff.

Willow Detroit sits in the Alley Behind Savannah Blue the iconic gold door with the willow tree painted in front marks the secret entrance. Upon arrival you're greeted by opulent gold mirrors that lead to a curtain. Once behind the curtain I felt like I was instantly transported to an exclusive underground experience. The main dining room is dimly lit and there's a massive willow tree sprouting from the bar that serves as the focal point of the room. The walls are covered in historial images paying homage to Detroit history & culture and also early African American contributions to mixology and cocktail creation which many of the drinks on the menu derive from.

Once you are seated the bartender greets you with a complimentary cocktail which is always a VIBE. The menu contains mostly cocktails and wines however there are two charcuterie options: one containing meat, and a meatless option. The drinks were delicious and complex...they also packed a punch! I was really impressed by the spirit selection and went off the menu for my second drink (I told the bartender Mezcal & Sour) The staff were all super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu as well as the history of African American contributions to the bartending scene.

Buzz Rating: 10/10 the drinks are really good but they SNEAK UP on you. I had two drinks plus the welcome cocktail (my boyfriend and I stopped here before dinner and ended up completely skipping drinks at dinner after visiting Willow)

Ambiance: 10/10 Hidden Entrance, Dimly Lit, Friendly & Knowledgeable Staff, Wide Variety of Seating Options: Couches, High Tops, Bar Seats & Tables, Decorated with historical pictures

Price: $$$ Highend Speakeasy Cocktails

I really enjoyed my time and I anticipate this to be a frequent stop for me and a much needed addition to the emerging Detroit Speakeasy Scene.
